August is National Immunization Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of human and pet vaccinations. While much of the focus during this month is on human health, it’s equally important to recognize the role vaccinations play in keeping our pets healthy.

Pet Vaccinations Prevent Disease & Illness

Vaccinations are essential for preventing diseases that can be life-threatening to pets. Just like humans, pets are susceptible to various illnesses, some of which can be transmitted to humans (zoonotic diseases). Vaccinating your pet not only protects them but also helps safeguard public health by reducing the spread of these diseases.

Core vaccines for pets typically include those that protect against rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and feline leukemia. These diseases can cause severe illness or even death if left untreated. Rabies, for example, is a fatal disease that can be transmitted to humans, making it crucial to keep pets up-to-date on their rabies shots.

Preserve Community Health

Beyond protecting individual animals, vaccines play a critical role in community health by preventing outbreaks of contagious diseases. For instance, the parvovirus is highly contagious among dogs and can lead to significant outbreaks in communities if vaccination rates drop. That’s why all reputable boarding, daycare, and kennel facilities won’t accept your dog unless vaccinated.
